African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha)
Family: Gesneriaceae
African violets are among the world's most popular houseplants. They are well adapted to the challenges of indoor environments, including low humidity and filtered light. With regular watering, most African violets produce flowers throughout the year. The majority of commercially-grown African violet cultivars are derived from Saintpaulia ionantha, an East African species. Many color forms are available, including shades of white, pink, red, violet, and blue.
